Getting started

How best to start exercising

Start slow and increase your activity level. You will see there are taster and beginner sessions her on Heroes Strive – this is where you should start. Try the session out and repeat it and try and feel the difference as you can do more each time and increase your effort and endurance. To start with you might find your muscles and joints get a little sore a say or two afterwards but this is normal. Just gradually build up what you do.

Try to make exercise part of your daily life. Find the best time to work out for you – are you better getting it done first thing or like to give you an energy boost during the day.

Get into a routine. It takes a month for a new activity to become a habit. So try and keep at it so that it becomes easier to stick to. Plus as you start to see and feel the benefits that adds to your motivation to keep on going. Find your favourite trainers or exercise type. Try different things to keep it fresh.

There will be ups and downs – if you can’t do a few days or weeks. Life gets in the way. Just try to get started again and build up again. Be kind to yourself.

How to stay safe when you exercise

All our sessions have a warm up and cool down. These are there deliberately to help you exercise safely. We need to build up gradually and lubricate our joints and stretch properly at the end. So don’t skip those bits - stick with us.

Keep water handy when you are exercising and keep your fluids up. This helps your body perform better.

Wear the right kit – the right footwear is really important to exercise safely. Make sure you have clothing that is comfortable and loose.

Listen to your body – it is good to push yourself but you should stop your session if you feel pain, discomfort, nausea, dizziness, feel light headed, chest pain, short of breath.

If you have an injury – avoid exercising that area. After an injury has healed start back slowly and use light weights or resistance.

I’m scared I will hurt myself or get an injury.  - We have plenty of low impact options and seated exercises you can try first to see how you get on with those. Plus don’t forget the all important warm ups and cool downs to protect yourself from injury.

Giving Feedback

How to give feedback

If you want to send us some feedback on using the platform and any problems you have had or if you have suggestions for how we can improve it - we will be happy to hear from you. Simply drop us an email strivewellbeing@helpforheroes.org.uk

Staying motivated

How to keep your motivation going

Be proud when you have made the effort and done a session. Even if hard to start with – the more you do it the easier you will find it. Doing something is better than nothing.

Try to focus on the activities you CAN do if you are limited by a health issue – rather than what you might not be able to do. We have tried to give plenty of choices. Do give us feedback if there are certain conditions we are not supporting in Heroes Strive. We welcome feedback.

Write down why you want to do some exercise and the benefits you are hoping for. You could also talk about these with a friend or family member. This will help you keep motivated if you can refer back to the notes and the conversation to remember why it is important to you.

If you don’t think you are very sporty or co-ordinated – our trainers will guide you through the exercises. Repeat the exercises and you will get the hang of them. Don’t expect to get it all right the first time through. But enjoy the satisfaction of getting better as time goes by.

If you think exercise is boring – try to find exercises you like as that will help you stay motivated.
